When you see candy bars referred to as “all natural foods” or cookies labeled “high fiber foods” do you believe they’re really good for you? Some food manufacturers are now using many new tricks to persuade the general public that their products are healthy, regardless of the ingredients. Some of those ingredients include “natural flavorings”, artificial sweeteners, hydrogenated oils and trans fats, which have been linked to serious, life threatening diseases. Other ingredients are cleverly disguised as healthy high fiber foods or all natural foods, when in fact they’re really just more processed junk.

You don’t have to fall for the marketing gimmicks. Avoid eating mysteriously processed foods by including more real, all natural foods and high fiber foods in your diet. When you pay attention to what you eat you will increase your self-awareness and your self esteem. You’ll find that it’s easier to manage a healthy weight, create more energy and develop a happier, healthier lifestyle.

As you stick to a diet of more authentic all natural foods and high fiber foods, your digestive system naturally works to break down the nutrients using the proper amount of energy, without tricking the body. Foods that contain numerous additives may take longer to digest. They often force the body to work harder in order to metabolize the additives. This can drain vital energy, making you feel lazy and tired. All natural foods provide the body with more usable energy and high fiber foods help your digestive system work more efficiently. Your body likes that, so it rewards you with health and happiness.

Foods that contain artificial sweeteners are even more difficult to process. The body creates insulin in order to break down glucose. This is not a big problem when digesting all natural foods or high fiber foods that contain natural glucose. However, when you eat food that has artificial sweeteners the body believes it has consumed sugar. Insulin is then created, but can’t be used to break down the glucose because it’s not really there. In a sense, the artificial sweetener has tricked the body. The unused insulin is eventually stored in the liver. The more toxins that accumulate in your liver, the less fat that can be broken down. That’s why artificial sweeteners are believed to actually contribute to obesity, and have been known to trigger certain cancers.

By consuming more high fiber foods, especially all natural foods such as fruits and vegetables, you will feel healthier. Numerous studies have shown that this kind of sound nutrition will lower your risks of contracting life-threatening diseases. You will be far less fearful of getting sick and your brain will let your body know that. Often, it’s the stress created from thinking you might have an illness that actually contributes to the onset of a breakdown in the immune system.

Fiber is one of the most important elements missing from the standard American diet (SAD). It is common knowledge today that high fiber foods help protect the body against certain preventable diseases such as colon cancer, hemorrhoids, obesity, heart disease, high blood sugar and high cholesterol. This makes high fiber food an essential ingredient for a healthy happy life and an important part of the all natural foods you choose.

Experts suggest that people eat at least 35 grams of fiber per day. Unfortunately, the average person only consumes ten grams of fiber a day. If you stick to a diet filled with healthy, all natural foods, it’s much easier to reach that 35 gram target. High fiber foods can easily be obtained from fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, cereals, whole grains and pastas.

Here are a few specific examples of high fiber foods you can eat every day:

· Whole wheat breads and pasta
· Broccoli, carrots, cauliflower and celery
· Apples, bananas, oranges and berries
· Green beans, pinto beans, black beans
· Almonds, walnuts and cashews
· Tomatoes, peppers, onions and garlic
· Brown rice or other whole grains
· Lettuce, raw spinach or other leafy green vegetables in a salad

These all natural foods are easy to eat every day. If you are not getting enough high fiber foods in your diet then you may want to have fruit for a snack, or add beans and a salad to your main meat dish at dinner.

Eat more real foods to avoid causing trouble for your body, and stay away from ingredients like hydrogenated oils, trans fats, artificial sweeteners, colors or flavorings. Remember that a diet filled with all natural foods and plenty of high fiber foods will help you maintain a happy, healthy lifestyle.

Since maintaining a smooth digestive system is the first step in making sure the body receives proper nutrition, you can see why high fiber foods are essential when choosing healthy snacks for kids and athletes.

Because it takes the body longer to digest high fiber foods, this slows down the digestive process, which can be helpful for a couple of reasons. First, high fiber healthy snacks will be used more efficiently. Because they are in the system for a longer period of time, the body can extract more nutrients. Second, the fact that the food moves more slowly through the digestive tract means that the body feels full for a longer period of time. This is why high fiber foods are good for natural weight loss, and one of the reasons they make an excellent choice in healthy snacks for kids and athletes.

High fiber foods contain plant matter that can’t be fully digested by the body. It may be broken down into very small pieces, but the stomach acids and other digestive processes do not distill the fiber down into chemical components like other food we eat. For example, the body may break down proteins to create amino acids that are used in building healthy muscles, and carbohydrates may be broken down into sugars that are stored in the liver for quick energy later. This is not the case with fiber. The thing to remember here is that healthy snacks for kids and athletes should supply long lasting benefits, not short bursts that result in quick crashes. That’s why high fiber foods in healthy snacks can sustain kids and athletes longer.

One of the most appealing aspects of high fiber foods is their ability to act as “scrub brushes” for the digestive tract. The particles of undigested fiber can actually sweep away waste products that may have collected along the walls of the intestines. This may include a lining of mucus that blocks nutrients from getting to where they need to go. When you consume healthy snacks with high fiber food ingredients your body gets help in scrubbing away this mucus, allowing nutrients to pass through more efficiently. High fiber foods keep the colon clean, which in turn allows for better absorption of the nutrients from healthy snacks that kids and athletes eat.

It is thought that the ability of high fiber foods to keep the intestines clean may actually help prevent a number of disorders, including colon cancer. This is why it is important for athletes and kids to consume plenty of fiber in their daily routine. Since these two groups of individuals are often too busy to eat well-balanced meals it is a good idea to keep healthy snacks on hand that provide at least 4g of fiber per serving. Fresh fruits and vegetables are good choices, as well as some fiber bars. However, not all power bars have enough fiber to be considered very healthy snacks for kids and athletes.

High fiber foods are essential for a balanced diet and should be an important consideration when choosing healthy snacks for kids and athletes. Using high fiber foods as healthy snacks for kids and athletes means that you are giving the body its best opportunity for peak performance.

The reason fad diets never seem to work out is because most of them get people hooked on the idea of losing weight without changing their lifestyle. Taking shortcuts never works when you are trying to lose weight, and people jump from one diet to the next try to avoid the inevitable fact that you can’t eat whatever you want and get away with it.

High protein and low carb diets have been around for a while, but only recently became popular. Why the sudden interest? Probably because most people didn’t know about them until the fat free craze died down. All of sudden, everyone was running around afraid to eat a carbohydrate without getting the facts first.

High protein and low carb diets will make you lose weight quickly, but in a very unhealthy way. Carbohydrates are converted by the body into glucose, which is the optimal fuel for the body. One of the reasons you lose weight on a high protein and low carb diet is that when the body is deprived of glucose from carbs, it must get fuel from fat, which makes you lose weight.

Since you are no longer supplying the body with a steady source of glucose, the body begins using glycogen in the muscles. When glycogen is taken from muscle tissue, water is also released. The quick weight loss experienced is from the breakdown of muscle to get to the glycogen, and the accompanying water release. The more water you lose, the more weight you lose. The downside is dehydration and loss of muscle.

As muscle is lost, you lose strength. Fat and protein fuel, are not as efficient as carbohydrate fuel. Athletes and people on the go will struggle to find energy on this type of diet. You have to either be a couch potato, or willing to give up all the activities you enjoy in life in order to feel fulfilled on this diet.

That’s just the beginning, though. The high animal protein foods recommended for these high protein and low carb diets (red meat, bacon, ham, etc.) contribute to heart disease, immune dysfunction, colon and reproductive cancer, prostate enlargement, arthritis and diabetes to name only a few. Why would anyone want to risk their health in such a way just to lose a few pounds?

And as if all this is not bad enough, animal foods contain substances which are not conducive to good health: growth hormones, antibiotics, and pesticides to name a few. The fact that these programs allow you to eat all you want is not good advice. Never trust a diet that gives you the green light to eat ten pounds of bacon, then says an apple is unhealthy. New diets may be appealing, but you have to use a little common sense too.

On the carbohydrate side of the equation, there are simple carbs (good as in fruits and veggies) and complex”carbs (bad, as in grain products). Good carb foods have soluble fiber that slows the absorption of sugar into the cells, which results in less triglycerides being produced and stored as fat. Fruits and vegetables have high water content foods as compared to animal foods. The more water your food contains, the better.

Despite these concerns, there are healthy and safe ways to lose weight and keep it off without the unbalanced equation of a high protein and low carb diets which affects your health. What you want to do first is forget about the current fads and diets you see on magazine stands and television. They are there to sell you something, and it is not good health.

As an alternative, seek out a credible and proven weight loss program with a focus on cellular nutrition that encourages the importance of eating healthy fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. Soy-based protein meal replacement shakes are the best way to get the nutrition your body needs while allowing you to lose weight. Imagine drinking a 180 calorie shake that privides you with 2,000 calories worth of nutrition. You can easily begin to see how effective it is for losing weight.

Two things high protein and low carb diets won’t provide you with is a personal coach to make sure you get results, and a money back guarantee if it doesn’t work for you. With so many options and fads out there, it is wise to protect yourself in these ways so your efforts do fall to the wayside.

No matter how you chose to lose weight, always remember there are no shortcuts to proper nutrition and keeping your weight off for good. A willingness to lead a healthy lifestyle must be considered and executed. Otherwise you will find yourself jumping from one fad, like the high protein and low carb diets, to the next diet for the rest of your life without seeing successful results.

You can tell an experienced business traveler from one who is new to the experience. It is easy for someone new to business travel to participate in excesses on the road. As business traveler, you are an adult and you are trusted by your company to conduct yourself in a businesslike fashion during your time out representing the firm.

If you are setting out on a lengthy business trip perhaps lasting many weeks and traversing many cities, the road itself can take a toll on your health and well being. It is for this reason that observing some strict rules of good living on the road will pay off over the life of the trip and make the rigors of travel much less serious.

Much of the discipline of business travel involves simply introducing a daily routine to your life that includes some healthy activities so you can keep your physical, mental and emotional state in good shape and ready for business each and every day. Some simple but effective rules to live by for a healthy business travel experience include.

Sleep routines. You have routines at home that you use to cycle down toward rest. Adapt those to life on the road and allow yourself that hour before bed to get ready to rest as well as ample time to rest as well as sleep. Regular exercise. Most hotels have an exercise room or pool you can use to get some motion into your muscles. Time not working. For the sake of your mental health, take some time just for you.

If you are in a town that has some fun things to see, get away from the business side of business travel and go to the zoo or a museum or see an attraction to give your mind a break from the stress of business. Good foods. Don’t cave into the temptation to eat fast food. Don’t drink. Alcohol, while fun, is a huge drain on your body’s resources. The time drinking and recovering makes demands on your body that take away from the task of recovering your health each day. So avoid alcohol other than perhaps a glass of wine at night. You will survive the trip so much better if you are careful about your alcohol consumption.

SWEET FRUITS
Sweet fruits, especially all dried fruits are a concentrated source of
energy-fruit sugars (fructose) and they require unique digestion.
Simple combinations are best, such as a few dried fruits as a snack are
ideal, however, when combining with other fruits it is best to only have
a slice of apple or oher sub-acid fruit.
Bananas are a concentrated food and should not be combined with any
dried fruit, but can be combined with apple, apricot, peach or pear.
Don’t combine dried fruits with nuts, peanuts or any other food group
as poor digesion and gas will develop. Simple banana milkshakes are
a fair combination and can be nutritious. It is best not to include
any dried fruit in a fruit salad,a few slices of banana is alright.
Dried fruits need to be chewed very well and preferably taken with
a glass of pure water,to ensure that digestion goes smoothly.

SUB ACID FRUITS
Sub acid fruits combine very well with one another and therefore a complete
fruit salade can be made with them and be most nutritious. Obviously a few of
the sub acid fruits would not be included due to their unfavourable taste
combinations. Simple combinations such as avocado on toast or with a salad
with olives is alright. Apples or peaches with almonds is an excellent,
delicious simple snack.Paw paw with banana is an excellent snack. Grapes are
best eaten alone or just a few in fruit salad. A fruit salad with ice-cream
is delicious and alright. It is best not to combine more than one other fruit
from either the sweet fruit or acid fruit group in a fruit salad.

ACID FRUITS
Simple combinations of acid fruits is excellent, such as orange, pineapple,
mandarin and grapefruit. Or kiwifruit, strawberry, tangerine and pineapple.
The tomato is a acid fruit and is widely used in various combinations,
however, they are not always nutritionally favourable. Tomato with pasta, eaten
regularly can lead to ulcers in the digestive tract. Tomato in salads is
very common and is alright, especially due to the benefits of fresh salads.
Tomato restricts the digestion of carbohydrates such as bread and pasta.
This means the meal lasts longer in the stomach and/or is not as well
digested. Ideally, tomato should not be combined with starches and should
be replaced with red capsicum. Acid fruits do combine well with small portions
of sub acid or sweet fruits and such combinations as orange and almonds or
seed is alright or strawberry, pineapple and grated fresh nuts is good.

MELONS
All fruits require fairly simple digestion when compaired to starches, proteins
and fats, but melons require no digestion in the stomach and are basically the
simplest food to assimulate, due to their very high water content and very
simple structure;they contain no protein,no fats and a minute carbohydrate
content. Melons are best thought of as a drink and should not be eaten after
a large meal. They are an ideal breakfast food, make a melon fruit salad with
no other food and that will provide maximum benefits and taste sensation.
A small quantity of melon with a fruit salad is alright occasionally.
When melons are eaten with or after a large complex meal, fermentation can
occur and lead to gass and possibly stomach and intestinal pains.
Let the melon give you the simplest meal alone.

VEGETABLES
The variety of vegetables is abundant and provides the widest range of suitable
food combinations.Fresh salads are optimum nutritionally and combine very well
with all grains,or nuts and seeds,or animal proteins or legumes.
Ideally, fresh vegetables and cooked vegetables are not the best combinations,
especially when including the group of starch vegetables. Depending on
personel taste, numerous combinations of fresh vegetables can be excellent.
The taste and colours of vegetables enhances the appetite of any protein meal
and combines very well.Vegetables with dairy foods also combine very well.
Ideally you can combine any vegetable with any protein food or grain and
legume meal.

STARCH VEGETABLES
Most starch vegetables need to be cooked for easy digestion. Sliced or grated
raw starch vegetables such as carrot, radish, beatroot and pumpkin can be a
colourful and nutritious addition to a meal. Ideally, starch vegetables should
not be combined with nuts, seeds, grains, legumes and animal proteins.
It is common for the starch vegetables to be combined with meat, fish, eggs or
chicken, but it is likely for such to complate digestion, due to the different
requirements of starch vegetables compaired to proteins or grains and legumes.
Starch vegetables when cooked are prepaired into less complex starches and
when digested they require the action of the enzyme ptyalin, which is produced
by the action of chewing and salivary glands. Starch vegetables combine well
with one another and they combine fairly well with other cooked vegetables
and dairy foods such as milk, cheese or yogurt.

GRAINS & PRODUCTS
Generally the use of whole grains is very limited and the use of grain products
in commercial sales is most common.Rolled oats and rice are the most popular
whole grains with sweet corn also being used directly as a whole grain.
Such whole grains combine very well with vegetables, especially rice and corn.
Rolled oats combine very well with most sub acid fruits and milk.
The variety of bread is increasing to include mixtures of wheat, rye, oats, corn,
barley, triticale and rice. All of which combine very well with fresh vegetables
or dairy produce.Pasta is very suitable when combined with vegetables.
Pizza varieties are numerous and for best digestion the vegetarian with cheese
is alright. Pies and pastries are best when combined with vegetables such as
spinach,asparagus,cabbage,onion,leek or zuccini.

LEGUMES
Legumes is the term used to describe beans or peas, sometimes referred to as
pulses. Most legumes contain a fair amount of protein plus a generous supply
of carbohydrates. The best single combination with legumes is vegetables.
Numerous traditional meals include legumes with whole grain and vegetables.
Such as rice and beans, lentils and rice.Such combinations are good as they
improve the protein value of the legumes. The simple baked beans on toast is
a good, cheap and simple combination. Legumes should not be combined
with protein foods as they are a concentrated starch and need very different
digestion to meat, fish, eggs, nuts or seeds. Legumes combine with dairy foods
well. The peanut is an ideal snack food when eaten alone or as peanut butter
on bread or peanut sauce with rice.Corn chips with beans is a very good
combination. Carob powder is ideal with milk drinks. Legumes need proper
digestion or the problems of gas and stomach aches and indigestion will
easily occur.

NUTS & SEEDS
The best combination for nuts is with other nuts, especially almonds, brazil
and cashew as a complete protein snack.Simple snacks of almonds with apple
or peach is good.Nuts and seeds ar not the best combination. Nuts or seeds
with fresh or cooked vegetables is very good.Don’t combine nuts with starch
vegetables, legumes, animal protein or sweet fruits.Simple combinations of nuts
with cookies are alright.A fruit salad with acid fruits with nuts or seeds
is fine.Seeds such as sunflower combine well with oats and milk for breakfast.
Pumpkin seeds with rice is alright with vegetables.Alfalfa sprouts combine
well with sandwiches or salads.Sesame seeds are too small to digest, however
tahini is ideal with salads, bread or sub acid fruits.

ANIMAL PROTEINS
Compared to all other food groups, the animal protein foods require the most
omplex digestion, specially within the stomach. They all require high
concentrations of the enzyme pepsinogen, which is made up from hydrochloric
acid and the enzyme pepsin. The best combination for animal protein foods
is with salads or cooked vegetables,no starched vegetables.
A seafood combination is alright if no other food groups are eaten at
the same time,apart from salads.
A mixed grill is a very complicated meal to digest, especially when potatoes
and other starches are combined.Meat with vegetables combines very good.
Any fish meal is ideal with salads or cooked vegetables.
Eggs should not be combined with other animal proteins.Eggs in cakes and
vegetable omelets is alright. It is not recommended to combine any animal
protein food with another or with cheese.
Fish and chips are a fair combination, but not as a regular meal.Chicken and
salads is a good combination.Keep the meals simple and you will be assured
of better digestion.

DAIRY & OTHER PRODUCTS
Cheese is the most concentrated dairy food.It combines well with salads, bread,
pasta and with starch and other vegetables.Cheese requires unique digestion
and should not be combined with proteins as they require very different
digestion.Cheee and milk will inhibit the secretion of essential digestive
enzymes required for protein digestion. It may feel like a satisfying meal,
but the result is often gas, indigestion and aches a few hours later.
Butter with bread or vegetables is alright.Yogurt is best eaten alone or
with a simple addition of apple, apricot or peach. Due to the high fat content
of dairy foods, they privide a satisfying and taste abundant combination with
other foods, especially when sugar is added such as ice-cream.Small

Protein is essential for growth and development. It provides the body with energy, and is needed for the manufacture of hormones, antibodies, enzymes, and tissues. It also helps maintain the proper acid balance in the body.

When protein is consumed, the body breaks it down into amino acids, the building blocks of all proteins. Some of the amino acids are designated nonessential. This does not mean that they are unnecessary, but rather that they do not have to come from the diet because they can be synthesized by the body from other amino acids. Other amino acids are considered essential, meaning that the body cannot synthesize them, and therefore must obtain them from the diet.

Whenever the body makes a protein when it builds muscle, for instance it needs a variety of amino acids for the protein making process. These amino acids may come from dietary protein or from the body’s own pool of amino acids. If a shortage of amino acids becomes chronic, which can occur if the diet is deficient in essential amino acids, the building of protein in the body stops, and the body suffers.

Because of the importance of consuming proteins that provide all of the necessary amino acids, dietary proteins are considered to belong to two different groups, depending on the amino acids they provide. Complete proteins, which constitute the first group, contain ample amounts of all of the essential amino acids. These proteins are found in meat, fish, poultry, cheese, eggs, and milk. Incomplete proteins, which constitute the second group, contain only some of the essential amino acids. These proteins are found in a variety of foods, including grains, legumes, and leafy green vegetables.

Although it is important to consume the full range of amino acids, both essential and nonessential, it is not necessary to get them from meat, fish, poultry, and other complete protein foods. In fact, because of their high fat content as well as the use of antibiotics and other chemicals in the raising of poultry and cattle most of those foods should be eaten only in moderation. Fortunately, the dietary strategy called mutual supplementation enables you to combine partial protein foods to make complementary protein proteins that supply adequate amounts of all the essential amino acids. For instance, although beans and brown rice are both quite rich in protein, each lacks one or more of the necessary amino acids. However, when you combine beans and brown rice with each other, or when you combine either one with any of a number of protein rich foods, you form a complete protein that is a high quality substitute for meat.

To make a complete protein, combine beans with any one of the following:

-Seeds

-Wheat

-Brown rice Corn

-Nuts

-Or combine brown rice with any one of the following:

-Beans

-Nuts

-Seeds Wheat

Most Americans eat too much protein, largely as the result of a diet high in meat and dairy products. However, if you have reduced the amount of meat and dairy foods in your diet, you should make sure to get about 50 grams of protein a day. To make sure that you are getting a great enough variety of amino acids in your diet, add protein rich foods to meals and snacks as often as possible. Eat bread with nut butters, for instance, or add nuts and seeds to salads and vegetable casseroles. Be aware that a combination of any grains, any nuts and seeds, any legumes (such as beans, peanuts, and peas), and a variety of mixed vegetables will make a complete protein. In addition, cornmeal fortified with the amino acid makes a complete protein. All soybean products, such as tofu and soymilk, are complete proteins.

These foods have high levels of fiber, and soy has been found to be the healthiest source of protein, more so than any other food. Soybean protein makes up 35 to 38 percent of its total calories, offers all eight essential amino acids, and is high in vitamin Bg. The average American consumes only about 10 milligrams of soy protein per day, although the American Heart Association recommends at least 25 milligrams. Available in health food stores, tofu, soy oil, soy flour, soy based meat substitutes, soy cheese, and many other soy products are healthful ways to complement the meatless diet. Fermented soy products, such as miso, tempeh, fermented tofu, and soymilk, are now widely available and are loaded with isoflavones, which are immediately bio available, and they have more genistein and nutrients than regular soy. They also fit in with Asian dietary practices. Fermentation yields more nutrients such as betaglucan, glutathione, and the B vitamins than standard products.

Yogurt is the only animal derived complete protein source recommended for frequent use in the diet. Made from milk that is curdled by bacteria, yogurt contains Lactobadllus addophilus and other “friendly” bacteria needed for the digestion of foods and the prevention of many disorders, including candidiasis. Yogurt also contains vitamins A and D, and many of the B complex vitamins.

Do not buy the sweetened, flavored yogurts that are sold in supermarkets. These products contain added sugar and, often, preservatives. Instead, either purchase fresh unsweetened yogurt from a health food store or make the yogurt yourself and sweeten it with fruit juices and other wholesome ingredients. Yogurt makers are relatively inexpensive and easy to use, and are available at most health food stores.

The body needs a certain amount of healthy nutrients to perform its basic needs. Whether you are a couch potato or an athlete you need the adequate nutrients to do what you have to do. However, because athletes are putting more demands on their bodies they need more nutrients than an average person needs.

If you take regular exercise and you have fitness goals that you want to achieve then you need to perform at your optimum level. To do this you need to exercise properly and you need a healthy balanced diet that provides the essential nutrients your body will need. Maximum performance can be achieved when you reach equilibrium between the nutritional intake and your level of exercise. Achieving this balance will result in your body reaching and maintaining its natural weight. This will also result in higher levels of energy, vitality and strength to meet the demands and excel at your training program.

A physically active person will need to eat more calories in their diet. Calories are needed to expend they energy you need to power your body. To acquire these calories you will need more carbohydrates. Foods that are high in carbohydrates provide the fuel the body needs to move. Carbs do this by enabling the body to covert them in to glucose which is needed to power your muscles. You need to eat plenty of carbohydrates on a daily basis, because the body has a low capacity to store it you will need to keep topping it up.

There are two types of carbohydrates. Refined carbohydrates are found in high sugar foods sweets, jam, cakes and pastries. These can also be found in foods containing refined flour such as pasta rice and white bread.

The other is complex carbohydrates such as porridge oats, brown rice and brown bread. The complex carbs release energy slowly while refined carbohydrates release energy in the body quickly.

It is advisable that you eat more of the complex carbohydrate foods and limit your intake of the refined foods. Refined foods that contain sugar make your blood glucose levels shoot up and down giving you very high and very low energy levels.

You also need to eat foods that contain protein. Protein plays an important role in repairing your muscle damage due to physical exertion. It also helps to build up your muscle mass that will increase the body’s strength and power. Protein foods include red meat that is low in fat, eggs, chicken and oily fish.

If you have a health condition or food allergy always seek the advice of a doctor before changing your diet.

Fiber and Brain Health

As we age, our bodies begin to deteriorate. No matter how well we take care of ourselves, we become slower, more fragile, and our mental capacity suffers. The good news, however, is that a diet rich in high-fiber foods may help support brain and bone health-two of the most common concerns among elderly Americans.
More than 4.5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, and every year more than 350,000 new cases are diagnosed in the United States. While its affect on memory and personality are profound, Alzheimer’s can also be deadly, resulting in approximately 60,000 die deaths yearly.

By the middle of the twenty-first century more than 13 million U.S. citizens are expected to have this irreversible brain disorder, but a high-fiber that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds may be effective in lowering your risk of developing Alzheimer’s as you age.

Swedish scientists have established that people who effectively control their weight, cholesterol, and blood pressure can significantly decrease the risk of suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, and that’s where high-fiber foods come in. In addition to regulating blood pressure, fiber helps to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels while raising the protective HDL (good) cholesterol levels.

As a calorie-free weight loss tool, fiber helps manage hunger by stimulating the release of cholecystokinin (CCK), a hormone that sends a message to your brain that you are full. It also promotes and prolongs the elevation of CCK in the blood, which makes you feel full for longer periods of time. High-fiber foods also help normalize blood glucose levels by slowing down the time it takes food to leave the stomach and delaying the absorption of glucose (blood sugar) from a meal.

Finally, because it helps to block the absorption of calories consumed and lead those calories out of the body, fiber actually eliminates calories from the foods you eat. As a result, those who consume a high-fiber diet tend to lose weight and more effectively manage a healthy body weight.

Fiber and Bone Health

Can high-fiber foods keep your bones strong? When researchers turned their attention to the bone health of people taking part in the long-term Framingham Heart Study conducted in Massachusetts, they found that those who ate the most fruits and vegetables also had the strongest bones as they aged. According to Associate Professor of Nutrition at Tufts University Katherine L. Tucker PhD, “this provides yet another reason to emphasize the intake of fruits and vegetables.”
Although the healthy bone benefits of high-fiber fruits and vegetables may be linked to the beneficial amounts of potassium and magnesium that they contain, researchers cannot rule out other factors, such as fiber, as an aid to bone strength.

An important discovery in the study was that people who ate large amounts of processed foods (that are low in fiber and minerals) had weaker bones. Eating a low-fiber diet also makes you more likely to be among the nearly 30 million Americans who suffer from osteoporosis, a degenerative bone disease that often occurs in middle age. Osteoporosis can often lead to debilitating hip fractures, which in many cases cause disability and an overall deterioration of health.
