One of the most common factors that affect people’s ability to stick with their weight loss program is food cravings. They start their diet with good intentions and then the cravings for chocolate and fast food kick in. This can throw you off course and you end up putting on the weight you had lost. When this happens you become guilty and frustrated and end up eating the food you need to avoid.
To overcome these craving takes self awareness, knowledge, determination and a little forward planning.
Lets begin.
Know Your Past
Understanding your relationship with food will go a long way to help you find a solution to controlling your carb cravings. We tend to be dependent on certain foods because they have been a part of our diet for so long, in a way they become a habit. For example, if you have eaten a lot of pasta based foods then you should try and limit these types of foods to a maximum of 3 times a week.
The funny thing is, if you cut out the high carbohydrate food you crave for you will probably crave for them even more. The key is to eat them in moderation and mix them with protein foods such as fish, lean meats and vegetables. By adapting your diet you can still eat the food you love but you are also controlling what you eat and this helps to reduce your carb cravings.
Get a Friend
If you feel you do not have the confidence to stop your cravings on your own then get a friend who can help you. This is actually a great idea as it can offer you many benefits and increase your chances of not giving into your cravings. The best thing to do is tell your friend what you are doing and how you want them to help you. Be clear about this so, they know where they stand in your quest to lose weight. When times get tough contact them to discuss the issues you are going through. Even if they cannot offer you a solution, just having someone to talk to is beneficial. They can also act as a motivator to encourage you to keep going when the going gets tough.
Healthy Alternative
If you find that your cravings are getting too much then have a healthy alternative in place if you feel you are going to give in. This can either be a fresh fruit, fruit juice anything that stave of those pangs of hunger that can increase your cravings. Also get into the habit of drinking sufficient amounts of purified water as dehydration can also increase your cravings for carbohydrates.
