Probiotics are living micro organisms that have are beneficial to their host. They can help regulate an organism when consumed in adequate quantities. Even though research into probiotics is relatively new, so far they appear to be good for you, and their benefits can vary from helping you regulate the flora in your gut to possible colon cancer prevention.
However, they are not to be taken as medicine and they should not replace formal medicine or doctors consultations. If anything, probiotics should act as a supplement to a healthy diet and lifestyle because it is the only way in which you can actually see results and improvement in your own body.
Probiotics are now sold as a magical solution for stomach problems when they are actually good as a prevention tool and they can’t really work alone. If you’re eating rubbish all the time probiotics won’t be able to help you much. Advertisers know this, so they target the health worried population, those people that are already consuming other supplements and that are already leading healthy lifestyles. Because the consumers in this segment of the public are the ones who would be interested in new ways of keeping fit and well and it is also this segment of the public for whom probiotics are bound to work.
It is not a miracle, it is beneficial though, especially for stomach related health, and there are many different types of probiotics out there. The ones found in fermented dairy products like Lactobacillus are the most commonly consumed due to being the most advertised ones. But remember that their success depends on the type of health regime of who consumes it.
If there are more serious health concerns then of course you will need to see a doctor and not just drink some special yoghurt; it might alleviate your stomach, it won’t cure diseases. But if used wisely it can help preventing them.
When buying probiotics you need to be sure that you are getting the right one for your individual needs, buy them from an experienced retailer, seek expert advice and always read the label. Don’t just trust the TV when deciding which one to consume and don’t expect miracles from them, it is all up to you. They can’t replace a healthy diet but they should supplement one.
